About the event

You are invited to join in this exciting 8 week composition course, which will demystify the art of composition, help each student realize their inner potential, and teach the basic concepts of proper notation and compositional skills. Each student will write an original composition over the period of the course, receive a professional printed copy of their composition, and have it performed at the final Virtual Recital, Friday, July 30th at 5PM. Students will also have weekly assignments on theory and notation, short composition and improvisation exercises. Class sizes will be maintained between 3-8 students and a beginner and intermediate course will be offered. More class periods may be offered by demand.

Beginner course

Tuesday's 2:00 - 2:45 PM

Requirements: basic music reading skills and a ready to learn attitude. Ability to print out weekly worksheets.

In addition to writing an original composition that will be performed at the final virtual recital, topics covered will include:

  • Range
  • Dynamics
  • Tempo and Meter
  • Melody and Harmony
  • Repeats and Patterns
  • Question/Answer Melodies,

Intermediate course

Thursday's 2:45 - 3:30 PM

Requirements: Grand Staff note names, Roman numeral chords I, IV, V, V7, simple intervals, and a ready to learn attitude. Ability to print out weekly worksheets.

In addition to writing an original composition that will be performed at the final virtual recital, topics covered will include:

  • Intervals and Chords
  • Motifs
  • Articulation
  • Major and Minor Harmonies
  • Binary, Ternary, Rondo Forms
  • Phrasing and Highpoints,
